Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment has a reputation it does not deserve. In modern dentistry, it is a procedure designed to relieve pain and save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. At Allard Station Dental in SW Edmonton, we offer root canal treatment for adults and teens with tooth pain or infection. Our clinic on Allard Boulevard SW is open seven days a week, so you can be seen promptly when a tooth is causing trouble.

What a Root Canal Is

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected, often from deep decay or a crack in the tooth, it can cause pain and swelling. Root canal therapy removes the infected pulp, cleans the inside of the tooth and seals it, so you can keep biting and chewing on your natural tooth. Saving your tooth means you may avoid an extraction and the need for an implant or bridge.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

  • Severe or throbbing tooth pain, especially when chewing.
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • A deep cavity or cracked tooth.
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums near a tooth.
  • A bump on the gum, sometimes with a bad taste.
  • A tooth that has darkened in colour.

Some teeth that need a root canal cause no symptoms, which is why regular exams and X-rays matter. If you have severe pain or swelling, call us right away.

How a Root Canal Works

  1. Exam and X-ray: your dentist examines the tooth and takes digital X-rays to confirm the diagnosis.
  2. Numbing: local anesthesia is used so the area is numb. Laughing gas is available if you would like to feel more relaxed.
  3. Cleaning the tooth: the dentist makes a small opening, removes the infected pulp and cleans the inside of the tooth using modern rotary instruments.
  4. Sealing: the cleaned space is filled and sealed to help prevent re-infection.
  5. Restoration: a filling or crown is placed to protect the tooth. A same-day follow-up crown is often available.

Comfort During Treatment

We use effective local anesthesia, and we offer optional laughing gas for patients who feel anxious. Many patients are surprised by how comfortable treatment is and by how quickly pain from the infection settles once the tooth is treated. Oral sedation options are also available.

Before Your Visit

  • Tell us when the pain started and what makes it better or worse.
  • Bring a list of your medications and any allergies.
  • Bring your insurance information.
  • Follow any instructions we give you, such as taking medication before your visit if it is recommended.

After Your Treatment

  • Your mouth will be numb for a few hours. Avoid chewing until the numbness wears off.
  • The tooth and gums may feel tender for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relief can help, as directed by your dentist.

  • Keep brushing and flossing normally, and book your follow-up for the crown if recommended.
  • Call the clinic if you have swelling, fever, severe or worsening pain, an allergic reaction or bleeding that does not stop.

Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing

Our fees run 5% below the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, and you will receive a written cost estimate before treatment begins. We bill your insurance directly, so you pay only your portion. Many plans cover part of root canal treatment, and financing options and monthly payment plans are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a root canal hurt?

The procedure is done under local anesthesia, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Many patients find the relief from infection pain is quick. Laughing gas is available if you feel nervous.

How long does a root canal take?

It depends on the tooth and the condition of the infection. Your dentist will give you an idea of how long to plan for.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Often yes. A crown helps protect the tooth after treatment. Your dentist will tell you whether your tooth needs one.

Can I eat after a root canal?

Wait until the numbness wears off, and avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has been fully restored.

What is the alternative to a root canal?

The main alternative is removing the tooth and replacing it with an implant, bridge or denture. Saving your natural tooth is often preferable, and your dentist will explain your options.

Is a root canal covered by insurance?

Many plans cover part of the cost. We bill your insurance directly and give you a written estimate so you know what to expect.

Is a root canal an emergency?

If you have severe pain or swelling, call us right away because we see emergencies the same day. A root canal for a milder problem can usually be scheduled as urgent care.
