What Tooth-Coloured Fillings Are
Tooth-coloured fillings, also called composite fillings, are made from a resin that is custom-shaded to match your enamel. After the decayed part of the tooth is removed, the resin is placed and hardened, restoring the tooth's shape and function. Composite bonds directly to the tooth, which means we can often remove less healthy tooth structure than with old-style amalgam fillings. The result is a stronger tooth and a natural look with no metal showing.
Who Needs a Filling
- Anyone with a cavity found at an exam or X-ray.
- Patients with a small chip or crack in a tooth.
- People with sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet foods that may come from decay.
- Patients who want to replace an old silver filling with a more natural-looking one. Your dentist will advise if a replacement makes sense.
Benefits of Composite Fillings
- Mercury-free composite resin.
- Custom-shaded to match your natural enamel.
- Direct bonding that preserves more natural tooth.
- Most fillings completed in a single visit.
- A natural look that blends in with the rest of your smile.
How the Filling Procedure Works
- Numbing: the area around the tooth is numbed so you stay comfortable. Laughing gas is available for anxious patients.
- Removing decay: the decayed or damaged part of the tooth is carefully removed.
- Placing the composite: the resin is placed in layers, shaped to fit your tooth and hardened with a special light.
- Bite check and polish: your dentist checks your bite and polishes the filling so it feels smooth.
When a cavity is too large for a filling, your dentist may recommend a crown instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are tooth-coloured fillings as strong as silver fillings?
Modern composite fillings are strong and bond directly to the tooth. Your dentist will recommend the best option for the size and location of the cavity.
Do tooth-coloured fillings contain mercury?
No. We use mercury-free composite resin.
How long does a filling take?
Most fillings are completed in one visit. The time depends on the size and location of the cavity.
Does getting a filling hurt?
The area is numbed first, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Laughing gas is available if you feel nervous.
How long do composite fillings last?
With good care and regular checkups, fillings can last for years. How long yours lasts depends on its size, your bite and your oral hygiene.
Can I eat right after a filling?
Wait until the numbness wears off before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue. Your dentist will give you specific instructions.
Should I replace my old silver fillings?
Not always. Your dentist can check your existing fillings and tell you whether any need to be replaced.
