Our Orthodontic Options
- [Invisalign clear aligners](/services/orthodontics/invisalign/): a series of custom-made, nearly invisible aligners that gradually move your teeth, with a 3D preview of your treatment plan.
- [Traditional braces](/services/orthodontics/braces/): metal brackets and wires that guide teeth into position, a proven option for crowding, overbites and more complex bite concerns.
- [Kids' braces and orthodontic checks](/services/childrens-dentistry/kids-braces-orthodontics/): early assessments to find out when treatment may be needed as permanent teeth come in.
Signs You May Benefit From Orthodontic Treatment
- Crowded or overlapping teeth.
- Gaps between teeth.
- An overbite, underbite or crossbite.
- Teeth that are hard to clean because of their position.
- A child whose baby teeth were lost early or who sucks their thumb, which can affect how teeth come in.
Invisalign or Braces?
Invisalign is preferred by many people because the aligners are far less noticeable than bracket-and-wire braces. They are removable for eating and brushing, but they need to be worn about 20 to 22 hours a day to work well. Traditional braces are still the more effective option for more complex bite problems and do not depend on you remembering to wear them. A consultation lets your dentist examine your teeth, discuss your goals and recommend what suits you.
What to Expect
Treatment begins with X-rays and photographs so your dentist can plan how your teeth should move. You will receive a clear plan, an estimate of the cost and an idea of the timeline before you commit. Throughout treatment, you will have regular visits to check progress and make adjustments. After treatment, a retainer is usually recommended to help keep your teeth in their new positions.
Fees, Insurance and Payment
Our fees run 5% below the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, and we bill your insurance directly where orthodontic coverage applies. Financing options and monthly payment plans are available, and you will receive a written cost estimate before treatment begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
What age should my child be seen for orthodontics?
Children can be assessed at any age, but many dentists recommend an orthodontic check around age 7, when permanent teeth start to come in and bite problems become more apparent. An assessment does not mean braces start right away.
Are adults too old for braces or Invisalign?
No. Orthodontic treatment is not age-specific, and many adults choose Invisalign or braces. Your dentist will check the health of your teeth and gums first.
Is Invisalign as effective as braces?
Invisalign works well for many cases, but traditional braces can be more effective for more complex bite problems. Your dentist will advise which suits you.
Does orthodontic treatment hurt?
You may feel some soreness for a few days after getting braces or a new set of aligners, which usually eases. Over-the-counter pain relief can help.
Will I need a retainer afterward?
Usually yes. Teeth can move back toward their old positions, so a retainer helps keep your results.
