When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth coming in, whichever comes first. Early visits are not about treatment. They are about getting your child comfortable, catching issues early and giving you the home-care tools that help prevent cavities. After that, most children should be seen about every six months, or as your dentist recommends.
A Kid-Friendly Approach
We take the time to explain things in a way children understand, and we go at your child's pace. Parents are welcome to stay with their child, and we are happy to answer your questions about brushing, diet, thumb-sucking, grinding and anything else on your mind. If your child has had a difficult experience in the past, let us know when you book.
Insurance, Billing and Payment
We offer direct billing to insurance, and our fees run 5% below the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide. We accept major insurance and government plans, and financing options and payment plans are available. You can read more in our Parent FAQs, and you will receive a written cost estimate before any treatment begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should my child first visit the dentist?
By age one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing, as recommended by the Canadian Dental Association.
How often should my child see the dentist?
Most children benefit from a checkup about every six months. Your dentist may recommend a different schedule based on your child's needs.
Do you accept direct billing for children's dental visits?
Yes. We bill insurance directly, and our team can help you understand your child's coverage. Our emergency page also mentions that we accept major insurance and government plans.
Are dental sealants safe for my child?
Dental sealants are a common, painless way to protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth from cavities. Your dentist will explain whether they are right for your child.
My child is nervous about the dentist. What can I do?
Let us know when you book. We will take extra time, explain each step and go at your child's pace. Talk about the visit in a positive way beforehand, and bring a favourite comfort item if they have one.
When should my child be checked for braces?
Many dentists recommend an orthodontic check around age seven, when permanent teeth begin to come in. An assessment does not mean braces start right away.
