TMJ Treatment

If you wake up with a sore jaw, get headaches in your temples or hear clicking or popping when you open your mouth, your jaw joint may be overworked. At Allard Station Dental in SW Edmonton, we assess and treat temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems for adults, with a plan built around the cause of your symptoms. Our clinic on Allard Boulevard SW is open seven days a week, so you can book an assessment when it suits you.

What TMJ Disorders Are

The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull, one on each side. TMJ disorders are surprisingly common. Most cases are linked to clenching, grinding or a bite that is even slightly out of balance, which can overwork the joint and the surrounding muscles.

Signs You May Have a TMJ Problem

  • A sore or tired jaw, especially in the morning.
  • Headaches in the temples.
  • Clicking or popping when you open or close your mouth.
  • Pain or tightness in the face, neck or around the ears.
  • Worn, flattened or chipped teeth from grinding.

These symptoms can have different causes, so an assessment is the best way to find out what is going on.

Our Approach

We start with a careful jaw and bite assessment to find the underlying cause, then build a treatment plan around it. Depending on your case, options may include:

  • Custom-made night guards: many patients find significant relief from a night guard alone.
  • Bite adjustments: small changes to relieve stress on the joint.
  • Physiotherapy referral: coordinated care with a physiotherapist when it is needed.
  • BOTOX therapy: an option for persistent muscle tension.

How Treatment Works

  1. Assessment: your dentist asks about your symptoms and examines your jaw, muscles, teeth and bite.
  2. Diagnosis: we explain what we find and what may be contributing to your symptoms.
  3. Plan: you receive a recommended plan and a written cost estimate before treatment begins.
  4. Treatment: we create your night guard or carry out the recommended steps.
  5. Follow-up: we check your progress and adjust the plan if needed.

Before Your Visit

  • Note when your symptoms happen, such as on waking, when chewing or during stressful times.
  • Tell us about any headaches, ear pain or jaw locking.
  • Bring a list of any medications or treatments you have tried.
  • Bring your insurance information.

After Your Treatment

  • Wear your night guard as directed, usually while you sleep.
  • Give your jaw a rest. Avoid very hard or chewy foods and wide yawning while it is sore.
  • Try to notice and stop daytime clenching.
  • Keep your follow-up visits so we can check progress and adjust your guard.
  • Call the clinic if your jaw locks, symptoms get worse, or you have swelling, fever, lasting pain or bleeding.

Cost, Insurance and Direct Billing

Our fees run 5% below the Alberta Dental Association Fee Guide, and you will receive a written cost estimate before treatment begins. We bill your insurance directly where coverage applies, and financing options and payment plans are available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes TMJ pain?

Most cases are caused by clenching, grinding or a bite that is slightly out of balance, though other factors can also contribute.

Will a night guard help my TMJ symptoms?

Many patients feel significant relief from a custom-made night guard, but results vary. Your dentist will assess whether it suits you.

Is TMJ treatment painful?

Most treatments, such as getting a night guard, are comfortable. Your dentist will explain any procedure and what to expect.

What is BOTOX therapy used for in TMJ care?

BOTOX therapy can be an option for persistent muscle tension. Your dentist will tell you whether it might help and explain what is involved.

Do you work with other health professionals?

Yes. When it is helpful, we coordinate care with physiotherapists.

Is a headache always a sign of TMJ?

No. Headaches have many causes. If you also have jaw soreness, clicking or grinding, a TMJ assessment can help find out whether your jaw is involved.
