Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease is largely preventable by regularly brushing, flossing and dental cleaning, since it is usually the result of poor oral hygiene. Practicing good oral hygiene can greatly reduce one’s risk of contracting periodontal disease, but if the gums have already taken years of damage from infection and neglect, then this calls for the attention of a dental professional.

Practicing good oral hygiene can greatly reduce one’s risk of contracting periodontal disease, but if the gums have already taken years of damage from infection and neglect, then this calls for the attention of a dental professional.

Gingivitis is the most common form of periodontal disease and can be averted by taking better care of your mouth by brushing at least twice a day and flossing. Gingivitis is characterized by the inflammation and redness of the gingiva, the gums around the base of the teeth, gums that bleed easily, bad breath, receding and tender gums.

If left untreated, Gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is characterized by receding, inflamed and bleeding gums. This is caused by periodontal bacteria that, while they natural occur in the mouth, can severely damage the teeth when the right conditions are met, when plaque and tartar are allowed to build up in the hard to reach areas of the mouth, which become breeding ground for the bacteria. These bacteria can eventually cause tooth loss so make sure to schedule a dental cleaning appointment with us once every six months or as prescribed by our dental professionals to make sure your mouth is clear of plaque and tartar.
