Edmonton Dentist: Differences Between Gingivitis and Periodontitis
Edmonton Dentist — Your oral health does not only depend on the colour of your teeth or the smell of your breath. It is widely advisable to brush the teeth at least two times a day; however, one mostly overlooked part is the gums, which can totally impact your oral health in more ways than you can imagine. In sh.ort, everything in your mouth can impact your oral health. It does not stop on the state of your teeth.
Your gums are essential in keeping your mouth holistically healthy. This is where your teeth are rooted after all. Aside from your teeth, every dentist recommends brushing your gums because bacteria buildup in the gums would most likely affect your teeth and in the long run, sacrifice your oral health.
Two of the most common gum diseases that your mouth may suffer from are gingivitis and periodontitis. Both are periodontal or gum diseases but one is more severe than the other. How do they affect oral health and how exactly do they differ from each other?
What is Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gums that is often caused by excess plaque. The bacteria in plaque buildup cause the gums to become inflamed which results in bleeding when brushing. The teeth are still intact. The symptoms are not necessarily painful and may include bleeding in the gums when flossing or brushing, swelling, and bright red colour of the gums.
Although gingivitis is brought by unhealthy brushing habits, it is not necessarily a hopeless case because it can still be treated after reversing your habits as per your Edmonton dentist’s instructions.
Gingivitis, if treated, may disappear. It is, after all, the earliest stage of periodontal disease. If detected early, treatment is possible so consulting an affordable Edmonton dentist as soon as possible is highly recommended. If left untreated, it may result in periodontitis which is dangerous and permanent.
What is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis is a severe infection that damages the gums and the jawbone permanently. Because the gums are left unhealthy, it starts to pull away from the teeth, creating small pockets. The small spaces will collect debris and bacteria over time and will lead to infection.
The body’s immune system fights these bacteria but the toxins and poison produced by the bacteria and the enzymes of the immune system will start to permeate the bone and gum tissues, which may ultimately lead to the teeth becoming loose as it is no longer anchored deep into the gums, and over time, will fall out.
The symptoms include red, swollen, or bleeding gums, pain when chewing, increased sensitivity, poor alignment of the tooth, clear pockets between the teeth and the gums, and ultimately, loss of teeth.
At this point, it is highly recommended to seek periodontal treatment. It is important to seek your Edmonton dentist’s help even at the start of the symptoms of gingivitis so that it can still be reversed or treated because once it advances to periodontitis, treatment is much more complicated and you would most likely be required to undergo periodontal surgery.
You can prevent gum diseases before they start to worsen by paying close attention to your oral health. Consult your Edmonton dentist every 6 months or even more frequently if needed to monitor the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth so that future complications are prevented and alleviated immediately.
